May the 4th Be With You: Lightsaber-Inspired Case for Crochet Afghan Hooks and Knitting Needles + Plush Toy Free Crochet Pattern!

by Crafts / DIY, Fan girl, free patterns, Yarn

As many of you probably know,  I am a bit of a nerd. I love Marvel superhero movies, Jane Austen, and especially Star Wars. I consider them all epic stories that are pure entertainment from start to finish (yes, that is what Jane Austen novels and superhero movies have in common). So, for Star Wars Day I knew I had to do something to celebrate my love of the movies. Last year, I did a knitting pattern for an ewok hoodie and I’ve also transformed little Casper into a Darth Vader-loving, sweater-wearing heartthrob, but this year it is all about the light sabers.

This light saber case can be used for anything, but I thought it would work well for crochet afghan hooks and knitting needles. I have also provided the details needed to adapt the pattern into a plush toy that can be stuffed.

Supplies:

Instructions:

  1. Make a magic loop and single crochet 6 times into it.
  2. Increase in every single crochet around (12 sts).
  3. *1sc, 1inc* around (18 sts).
  4. *2sc, 1inc* around (24 sts).
  5. Single crochet around.
  6. Single crochet around (still 24 sts).
  7. *4sc, 1dec* around (20 sts). Place marker.
  8. Work even in single crochet for 1 inch (use marker as a guide).
  9. Change to black, single crochet for 1 inch.
  10. Change back to grey, work 2 rounds of single crochet.
  11. Change to black, single crochet for 1 inch.
  12. Change to grey, work in single crochet for 1.5 inches.
  13. Single crochet in post of previous row for one round (this creates the out-turned rim of the handle).
  14. Change to green and work even in single crochet for *** inches.
  15. Work one complete round of treble crochet, then one round of single crochet. Fasten off.
  16. Thread ribbon through treble crochet to tie your case closed.
  17. For button panel, chain 11 in grey yarn, skip first chain, and single crochet 10 times. Chain 1, turn, single crochet across. Fasten off. Sew to handle.
  18. For buttons, make a magic loop and single crochet 6 times into it. Repeat for both red and black colors. Sew to button panel

Plush Toy Option

To make a plush toy instead of a case, make buttons and button panel ahead of time and sew to handle before step 14. After step 14, stuff with polyfill and decrease in every stitch until there are no stitches left. Fasten off.
