Girl with Book: A Mixed-Media Tutorial

by Crafts / DIY, Mixed-Media Art

This mixed-media canvas sat unfinished for about a month until I was sketching one day and created this girl. Instantly, I knew that she would complete this collage. The Prima Marketing Water-Soluble Oil Pastels created a wonderful effect for the details.

Girl With Book Mixed-Media Tutorial Instructions:

Use gel medium to adhere scraps of book text to the canvas. Brush over the top of each piece with gel medium too.

Add some dark, textured paper scraps to the top and bottom corners. Seal entire canvas with gel medium.

Paint with a dark teal paint (I used a mix of turquoise paint with a touch of black, then added some gold to make it slightly more green). Make sure that you paint it thin enough that you can still see the book text underneath.

Mix gold paint with texture paste and push through a flower stencil. Lay the flower stencil so that only 1/4 or 1/2 is visible. This will leave room in the center for your sketch.

Add some marks with the gold paint using different mark making tools (bottle caps, credit cards, bristle brush).

Sketch a girl and use the extra dark teal paint to color her dress, then add some black or dark grey paint to the dark teal for the underskirt.

Color in the girl with oil pastels and use a water brush to blend. Dab away any excess color with a paper towel.

Color the border of the sketch with dark teal oil pastel and draw the color toward the center with a water brush. Add plenty of water so that you get a watercolor effect.

Rip a piece of book text slightly larger than your sketch. Mix gold paint and gel medium together and paint entire background, then adhere both the background and the sketch to the center of the canvas.
